Engaging Together

TCC • September 2, 2020

Wasn’t it great to have Fritz Moga return last week? I love Fritz’s heart for God, our church, and communicating God’s Word. As I watched the message, I was taken back to a time ten years ago when Kim and I had the privilege along with several members of our church to go to Israel. We were able to be in Jerusalem and stand over the city as the walls that Fritz talked about were being explained. Folks, God’s Word is real, true, and based on fact. The story of Nehemiah actually happened in history, and, therefore, we can learn how God worked in the lives of His people in the past with hope for His work in our present and future.

One of the key points we can glean from Nehemiah 3 is this phrase “next to him” that is used seven times. The idea is that the people chose to work together, and each person chose to do their part. They chose to join hearts and hands together to accomplish what was insurmountable in the eyes of everyone – even the builders of the wall. When we take our place upon the wall, God can do great things through us.

I’ve been struck by that as I’ve seen how much can be done by a few who get serious about working together. When each of us participate, we make the load lighter, we make the job easier, and we impact our world more. As we look at Nehemiah this summer, a key point we need to recall is this:
Every story about God’s people in the Old Testament has direct application to God’s church today.

That’s why our mission statement is:
We are engaging together to lead as many people as possible into a growing relationship with Jesus Christ. That mission will only be accomplished as we engage together. I know that’s complicated in our world of social distancing and face coverings because it’s hard to relate to when you can’t relate to them as we did before COVID.

This is where I want to stop and emphasize an idea I’ve expressed several times during the COVID disruption. I’ve said several times that we can have the freedom to choose our response to the reality we are now living in. One choice we can make is to do what we can to help others, our church, and our community and do it all in the name of God so others can see Jesus through our service.

We are working to look at opportunities we can engage in together and serve our community. Our Drive-Thru Food Drives have been such a huge success and Interfaith Food Ministry has expressed their gratitude for our impact. This week we were able to engage with the Grass Valley Downtown Association and help serve the businesses that are creatively moving their services outside. In a few weeks, we’ll be receiving a special offering to help with our ministry partners at Hospitality House and Interfaith Food Ministry. More than that, we’ve heard from many of you who are looking for ways to show Jesus to your friends by serving to meet the needs they have by mowing, moving, feeding, encouraging, praying, running errands, babysitting, and encouraging.

In order to engage together we must slow down and see the needs others have. We need to slow down and even if we’re six feet apart and covered with a face covering, do our best to actually “see” the people and the needs they have. Last week I told you about two people who blessed me when I really needed to know God was with me when I was having one of those difficult travel days. The first was the United Airlines Customer Service Representative who stopped a moment, looked me in the eyes over the top of her face covering and said, “I will pray for you.” It stopped me in my tracks and reminded me that I was not alone. God was with me and another human being cared. The second was when the young part-time United Airlines employee offered to drive me two hours through a major thunderstorm so I could get home to be with my mom. When he looked at me and said, “I will take you." I knew it was God showing His faithfulness in my life, but it came through a person who chose to engage. Later, I learned that the young man was a Follower of Jesus, and I was able to give thanks to God for how His people can bless others when they engage.

I want to encourage you during the days we are under our COVID restrictions and isolation that you won’t let fear, social distancing, or facial coverings stop you from slowing down, listening to someone’s story and need, and responding by engaging to offer some sort of comfort, help, or prayer. God wants to show the love He has for others through you and me. Let’s be ambassadors of joy, hope, and love. I heard a man say this week that a little bit of hope is all it takes to change someone’s outlook and story.

On Sunday we continue our RISE UP series by looking at Nehemiah 4. It seems that whenever someone wants to do something good and helpful, that others really don’t want what is best for everyone if it costs them. Nehemiah faced some overwhelming opposition from those who had something to lose if the walls were rebuilt. We’ll look at how he overcame the obstacles to God’s work.

Even though we’re live again in person onsite, it may be weeks before we can all be together again at church, so please make sure to stay engaged online.

Our services will continue to be streamed live at 9:00 and 11:00am, or you can watch them on demand any time you want right from our website or APP. If you haven’t downloaded the TCC APP, just go to the APP store and search for TCC GRASS VALLEY and download it today.

Last Sunday we offered an outdoor venue for people who wanted to be able to sing and sit outside during the service. This week we’re expanding that opportunity and offering an outdoor venue at 9:00am and 11:00am. You’ll find the shaded area on the West end of our building where our Children usually hang out (near the bears). We’ll have chairs available, but if you want to bring your own comfy recliner type chairs that’s good, too. Even though it’s outdoors, our Nevada County Health Department still requires social distancing and facial coverings, but we get to sing as loudly and enthusiastically as we want.

During this season we are a church of people who gather together both online and onsite to offer our worship to God.

Joyfully living everyday life on mission in intimacy with Jesus and others,

As we come to the final Sunday of the year, we’ll pause to do something sacred: remember . Together, we’ll look back and reflect on the many ways God has been faithful to us, celebrating the stories, milestones, and blessings He has poured out on our church family over this past year. It’s a moment to give thanks and to recognize that every good gift truly comes from Him. We’ll also gather around the Lord’s Table and celebrate communion, our tangible reminder that while we are grateful for what God has done, the best is still ahead. Because of Jesus, we don’t just look back with gratitude, we look forward with hope. We have eternity with Him to look forward to. Year-End Gift As we close the year, we’re also inviting those who feel led to give one final financial gift to help us finish the year strong. Every gift — large or small — helps us care well for our church family, support our ministry partners, and honor the staff who serve so faithfully. Your generosity enables us to continue being a church marked by gratitude, faithfulness, and generosity. Click here to learn more about our Year-End Gift or to give now. I am incredibly grateful for all God has done in and through Twin Cities Church this year, and I can’t wait to see what He has in store for us in the New Year. See you Sunday. This Sunday, we come to the final week of our Reclaiming Christmas series, and we’re turning our attention to a tradition many celebrate… and many others don’t understand: Advent. For some, Advent is a sacred rhythm — way to slow down, prepare their hearts, and anticipate the celebration of Jesus’ birth as well as look forward to His second coming. For others, it’s simply a countdown marked by tiny doors holding a daily dose of Christmas chocolate. And for some, it doesn’t factor into Christmas at all. But where did Advent come from? What does it actually mean? And how might reclaiming this ancient practice reshape the way we experience Christmas today? Join us as we unwrap the history, purpose, and surprising depth of Advent and discover how it can draw us closer to the hope, peace, joy, and love we celebrate in Jesus. Also don’t forget that Christmas Eve is only a few days away! We will gather for three candlelight services on Tuesday, December 24, at 2, 4, and 6pm. Invite your friends, your neighbors, and anyone who needs the light of Christ this season. Why do we give presents at Christmas? Why does Santa show up in living rooms, movies, and mall photos every December? And how did a generous bishop from the 4th century become the jolly icon of Christmas consumerism? This Sunday, we’re digging into the surprising story behind one of Christmas’ most beloved (and debated!) traditions. We’ll trace the journey from the first Christmas gifts in Scripture… to Saint Nicholas and his secret acts of mercy… to Santa Claus and the swirl of expectations that often define our holiday season today. But more importantly, we’ll explore what all of this means for Followers of Jesus now. How do we practice generosity without fueling entitlement? How do we parent wisely in a culture of over-the-top gift-giving? And what do we do with Santa — embrace him, rethink him, or retire him? It’s going to be an eye-opening, thought-provoking and, possibly tradition-reshaping conversation that you won’t want to miss. A quick pastoral note: because we’ll be taking an honest look at Santa’s history and role in our celebrations, if you’re a parent of young children and haven’t yet had “the Santa talk,” you may want to prayerfully consider whether to have them with you in the service or check them into Children’s Ministry and choose what to share afterward. This Sunday, we are concluding our Walking With Jesus series. We will consider those moments when even Jesus’ closest followers had to wrestle with their expectations of who they thought He would be and decide whether they would keep following Him when the path became costly, confusing, or different than what they hoped for. Spiritual maturity means learning to trust and follow Jesus not just in the moments when He feels close or when He meets our needs, but also in the seasons when emotions fade, answers aren’t clear, and obedience requires surrender. We will also celebrate baptisms at the end of each service! Baptism is a powerful, public declaration of a person’s decision to follow Jesus wherever He leads, so come ready to celebrate with our brothers and sisters who are going public with their faith. And if you’ve sensed that God may be inviting you to take this step, we’ll make space for you to respond as well. We live in a world that celebrates busyness disguised as faithfulness. But in Luke 10:38–42, Jesus gently reminds us that what He desires most isn’t our activity for Him, but our presence with Him. This Sunday, as we continue our Walking With Jesus series, Pastor Ron will help us unpack the story of Mary and Martha — two sisters who loved Jesus deeply but expressed it in very different ways. Through their story, we’ll discover how easy it is to get caught up doing things for Jesus while missing the invitation to be with Him. We will learn what Jesus really wants us to do (hint: it’s not more) as we grow in our intimacy with Him. Interested in getting baptised? We’ll be hosting a baptism class during the 9:00am service this Sunday, and another class on Tuesday at noon for those ready to take this step of faith and publicly declare their trust in Jesus. As we near the end of our Walking With Jesus series, we’re stepping into one of the most challenging and sobering teachings Jesus ever gave: His call to count the cost of following Him. Many of us first come to Jesus hoping He’ll fix what’s broken in our lives — and He often does. But Jesus also invites us into something deeper: a life of surrender, transformation, and daily choosing Him over our comfort, desires, and autonomy. As we’ll see this weekend, discipleship is costly, but what we gain in Christ is far more valuable than anything we lay down. If you’ve ever found yourself asking: Why does following Jesus sometimes feel so hard? What is He actually calling me to surrender? Is following Him really worth the cost? …this message is for you. Join us this Sunday as we explore what it truly means to take Jesus at His word and follow Him with our whole lives. You won’t want to miss it. In Luke 9, Jesus calls His followers to “deny themselves and take up their cross daily.” In a world that celebrates comfort and success, that’s a shocking invitation. Yet as we’ll see, it’s only by dying to ourselves that we discover what it truly means to live. This Sunday, as we continue our Walking With Jesus series, we’ll explore what it means to lay down our own desires and trust that God’s way is better — even when it costs us something. Because on the other side of surrender is life, freedom, and joy in Him. This Sunday also marks the end of daylight saving time, which means you get an extra hour of sleep, so I look forward to seeing you well rested and ready to learn. 😊 And don’t forget — tonight is our Fall Family Festival from 5–8pm ! This completely free, family-friendly event is a chance to shine the light of Jesus’ love into a night that’s often marked by darkness. Bring your family, invite your friends and join us as we love on our neighbors. I hope to see you there. This weekend, we’re continuing our Walking With Jesus series by exploring a topic that’s both fascinating and often misunderstood — spiritual authority. Throughout Luke’s Gospel, Jesus teaches and heals with astonishing authority. But what’s even more surprising is that He extends that same authority to His followers. What does that mean for us today? How do we understand and engage with the authority God has given His people? To help us navigate this conversation, I’ll be joined by my friend Dan Prout, founder of Sierra Ministries International . Together, we’ll look at what Scripture teaches about spiritual authority and how to walk in it with humility, faith, and confidence in Jesus.
