“What comes into our minds when we think about God is the most important thing about us.”
A.W. Tozer
If you were asked to describe God, what would you say? How would you describe Him? Every one of us views God through our own personal lens based on our experience with Him or from people who claim to associate with Him. We have many different ideas of who God is that were formed by culture, media, family, religion, and personal experience.
But how do we know we have a correct view of God? If it’s really the most important thing about us, then it’s vitally essential that we have an accurate view of God. Even though we’ve not seen God, we do have clear and understandable descriptions He gave us about who He is and how we can experience Him. God has revealed Himself, and He wants to be known by you.
In the Old Testament book of Exodus, Moses asks God to reveal Himself, and God answered that request through a self-disclosure statement.
“The LORD, the LORD, the compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in
steadfast love and faithfulness, maintaining steadfast love to thousands and forgiving
wickedness, rebellion, and sin. Yet He does not leave the guilty unpunished…
Do not worship any other god, for the LORD whose name is Jealous,
is a jealous God.” Exodus 34:6-7a;14 NIV
I encourage you to journey with us as we gather on Sunday mornings and consider the most important thing about us – what we think about God. We will study eight of His attributes that define His never-changing, consistent, and trustworthy character. There is no greater pursuit in life than to have an accurate understanding of God and experience a life-giving relationship with Him. Our faith and hope are founded on knowing God for who He reveals Himself to be.
You can attend every gathering in person, live stream online, or watch on demand. Please navigate through our website to find the schedule of messages and service. THIS SUNDAY, we’re thrilled to continue our God Is series by focusing on God’s description of Himself. This is who God says He is. When God chose to disclose His name, He gave us words we can understand and grasp that define His character and nature. This is important stuff because as we learned last week, our view of God impacts every area of our lives.
The second word God used to describe Himself is GRACIOUS. God’s gracious character is directly tethered to His compassionate heart. If you missed last week, please watch the service because it will really help you in your understanding of what Kim Thompson will talk about on Sunday.
To know God requires more than just knowledge. Knowing God involves a personal and relational experience. Truth is good, but not alone. Knowing God is about relationship, and relationship only exists within the context of ongoing personal encounters, shared experiences, and emotional interaction. That’s what God wants, and when we engage with Him personally and relationally, we’ll find the God we’ve been looking for.
