If you were asked to describe God, what would you say? How would you describe Him? Every one of us views God through our own personal lens based on our experience with Him or from people who claim to associate with Him. We have many different ideas of who God is that were formed by culture, media, family, religion, and personal experience.

But how do we know we have a correct view of God? If it’s really the most important thing about us, then it’s vitally essential that we have an accurate view of God. Even though we’ve not seen God, we do have clear and understandable descriptions He gave us about who He is and how we can experience Him. God has revealed Himself, and He wants to be known by you.

In the Old Testament book of Exodus, Moses asks God to reveal Himself, and God answered that request through a self-disclosure statement.

“The LORD, the LORD, the compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in

steadfast love and faithfulness, maintaining steadfast love to thousands and forgiving

wickedness, rebellion, and sin. Yet He does not leave the guilty unpunished…

Do not worship any other god, for the LORD whose name is Jealous,

is a jealous God.”  Exodus 34:6-7a;14 NIV

I encourage you to journey with us as we gather on Sunday mornings and consider the most important thing about us – what we think about God. We will study eight of His attributes that define His never-changing, consistent, and trustworthy character. There is no greater pursuit in life than to have an accurate understanding of God and experience a life-giving relationship with Him. Our faith and hope are founded on knowing God for who He reveals Himself to be.

We are so eager to continue our God Is series THIS SUNDAY by focusing on what may be the most illuminating character trait God uses to describe Himself. He is abounding in steadfast love. This name of God uses an ancient Hebrew word (HESED) that is rich in meaning. We might say it as loyal love, loyalty, lovingkindness, or unfailing mercy. It carries the idea of a promise-keeping loyalty motivated by deep personal affection. Knowing that God will stick with us no matter what we face or do helps us live with confidence and security. 

In this series, we’re looking at God’s self-disclosure of His character and nature as described in Exodus 34:5-7. You might want to read those verses before Sunday and ask God to begin preparing you to hear from Him. He wants us to know Him, but to know God requires more than just knowledge. Knowing God involves a personal and relational experience. Truth is good, but not alone. Knowing God is about relationship, and relationship only exists within the context of ongoing intimate encounters, shared experiences, and emotional interaction. That’s what God wants, and when we engage with Him personally and relationally, we’ll find the God we’ve been looking for.
