Mission to Nepal - Update 2

TCC • May 24, 2022

Dear Prayer Supporters,

I have arrived in Kathmandu safely and started teaching my first seminars this week. We just finished the 4th session of 11-session seminar of “A Pinch of Incense”. It is a week-long effort of covering the Christian movements in the first century Asian Minor. This will lead us to studying of Ephesians next week.

There are 23 attendees in a fairly crowed room, and those 23 pairs of eyes of the eager faces interact with me in every minute of the day, warming my heart and desires to enlighten them with some new knowledge that will be an encouragement in their faith walk. Here are some thoughts of this trip so far, comparing against my past experiences at other places.

  • I am surprised with how internationalized this country is. Most of young people speak some English, few very good, and they seem to be very comfortable with interacting with foreigners. Practically half the store front signs on the street are in English. This fact leaves me with such an encouragement to think of the day when this land is fully evangelized in gusto with this “foreign religion” of Christianity.
  • The Nepali language is much harder to grasp and pronounce than I thought. My effort of attempting to analyze and to bring some clarity to their Bible text based on my understanding of the language structure will have to be abandoned. This leaves me to depend completely on the translators and the point I will be making on my English Bible text. The good news is that the translator service provided so far are excellent.
  • We are progressing the classes in faster pace than planned. People are very receptive, better grounded and catches on faster than I anticipated In the current pace, we will finish the whole planned program one or two days earlier than planned.
  • The weather is nicer than home, the food is tolerable, the environment is pretty crowded and polluted, and so on. Not much different than what’s expected of less-developed country of this size. I am attaching few pictures.

Your prayers got me this far in relative ease through many of the difficulties mentioned previously and even some unspoken. I also personally feel much more at ease now and were able to focus on the progress since this train started rolling. Please continue to pray for this project in the following areas.

  • I feel OK physically other than minor jetlag effect but am mindful of possibly losing voice and energy as we grind along every day. Also, this country is doing better than home but is still not completely out of COVID disruption. Please pray for the wellbeing of me and all attendees till the end.
  • The room is too small to have desks for each person. They are trying really hard to write down as much as they can on notebooks on their lap. This also disrupts them from focusing on what I say and show on the screen. I don’t know if there is anything can be done about this but let’s pray that God will grant them super memory and concentration so that they can absorb without having to write down so much
  • All these pastors came from many different parts of the country (they are from 5 different districts) and they met most of each other for the first time here. I have this wish, also I am sure it is of Pastor Bier (my partner who is organizing this) that these people will form a good, long-lasting fellowship among them while here as they are all housed in this building together for the next two weeks. Please pray for their unity and forming a good network for Kingdom work.
  • There is no change in my wife Jane’s shoulder condition. They will run more scans next week. Thanks for your continued prayers for her.

I wish you all joyful Memorial Day weekend.

Last week, we saw how Jesus meets us with both grace and truth — grace that meets us where we are, and truth that calls us into something more. But that journey of transformation doesn’t happen automatically. There’s a battle taking place for what we believe about God, about others, and especially about ourselves. This Sunday, we’ll continue Walking With Jesus as we look at how He leads us out of the false identities and broken narratives that have shaped us, and into the freedom of knowing who we truly are in Him. I hope you will join us as we learn how to let go of the lies that hold us back and live in the truth that sets us free. It’s easy to compare ourselves to others and feel like we’re doing “pretty good.” Maybe not perfect — but at least better than t hem . But when we start measuring our worth that way, we miss the heart of God entirely. This Sunday, as we continue our Walking With Jesus series, we’ll look at a powerful moment in Luke’s Gospel that shows us how Jesus meets people with both grace and truth — and what that means for us today. Whether we’re weighed down by guilt or quietly confident in our own goodness, Jesus’ invitation is the same: come close and let His love change you. Jesus didn’t wait for people to come to Him — He intentionally moved toward outsiders, those the religious establishment considered untouchable, and reminded them that not only did God see them but loved them dearly. This Sunday, we’ll explore what it means to follow His example and love generously, extending God’s heart to those around us. Speaking of loving generously, Fall Family Festival is less than 4 weeks away! While it may seem counterintuitive for a church to have an event on Halloween, it’s our way of following Jesus’ example and radiating the light of God’s love into an otherwise dark night. Come help us share God’s love with our community. Bring a bag of individually wrapped candy with you to church on Sunday and then sign up to serve our neighbors at Fall Family Festival. We live in a world that buzzes with notifications and incessant noise. Our phones, our schedules, and even our own thoughts pull us in a thousand directions at once. It’s no wonder why so many of us feel restless, scattered, and spiritually dry. What if the greatest threat to our faith isn’t doubt, but distraction? What if our souls are starving for the very thing our fast-paced culture naturally distracts us from? This Sunday, as we continue our Walking With Jesus series, we’ll look at how Jesus navigated the constant pressures and demands for His attention without becoming overwhelmed — and how one of His most important practices could be the antidote our anxious, distracted souls desperately need. When Jesus says, “Follow Me,” it isn’t just an invitation to believe something new; it’s an invitation to walk with Him, to learn from Him, and to be shaped by His presence. Following Jesus always comes at a cost. But so does refusing to follow Him. This Sunday, in our Walking With Jesus series, we’ll consider what’s really at stake when we choose how to respond to His invitation to discipleship. Last week, we saw how Jesus’ ministry began with the Father’s blessing and identity spoken over Him . But what came next? Rejection, criticism, and pressure to compromise or conform at every turn. How did Jesus stand strong when others doubted, opposed, or even tried to silence Him ? He was secure in His Father’s love and empowered by the Holy Spirit. This Sunday, we’ll look at what it means to live with that same Spirit-filled confidence, rooted in God’s voice and empowered by His presence, not the world’s opinions. This Sunday we’re kicking off a new series, Walking With Jesus . Together, we’ll journey through Luke’s Gospel and learn how Jesus stayed rooted in the Father’s love, stood firm against pressure, and never lost sight of what mattered most. Our journey will begin where His public ministry began, grounded in identity, love, and blessing from the Father. That secure foundation shaped everything Jesus did, and it’s the same foundation we desperately need today. I hope you’ll join us as we take the first step in Walking With Jesus . It’s so easy to think of church as a place we go for 70 minutes on Sunday. But Jesus had something far bigger in mind. The church isn’t a building or a service; it’s people. WE are the church. We comprise this brand-new movement that Jesus came to start and it’s a movement that moves beyond a building and permeates every area in our community. When you step into your school, workplace, neighborhood, or family, you bring the presence of Jesus with you. This Sunday we’ll wrap up our Brand: New series by exploring what it means to live as the church everywhere we go and how each of us has a unique role to play in God’s mission. Have you ever noticed how the world works? The ones on top call the shots, set the rules, and expect others to fall in line. And deep down, we tend to think that’s how change happens, by overpowering those who oppose us. Jesus had a different idea. He looked His disciples in the eye and said, “Not so with you.” True leadership isn’t about getting your way; it’s about giving yourself away. This Sunday, we’ll explore what it means to lead, serve, and live in a way that flips the world’s expectations upside down.
