Standing Strong Amidst Uncertainty

TCC • November 5, 2020

As I sit down today with the intent of writing words of hope that bring perspective, I realize that we still don’t know who our president will be or what political party will control our country for the next four years. Even though our political future is unclear, one thing I do have clarity about is this: No matter who is sitting in the White House beginning in January, Jesus is still sitting on His throne. He is still King. Kim and I just talked about this foundational reality in our weekly video. You can trust God to be in charge and in control even if you don’t believe that the winner of the election is best for our country.

In the next few days (if not sooner), we will know the identity of the president of our country, and it’s my prayer that the outcry from the party who loses will be peaceful. I saw that stores and office buildings across our country had boarded up their windows much like they would if a hurricane were approaching. I really hope that storm does not materialize as some predict. I am praying for a supernatural peace that will envelop our country in the coming days. Will you pray with me?

I also want you to know that I’m praying for the angst you may be carrying over the entire election season we’ve been through and are still facing. I think that the emotional response has been heightened and made even more difficult as we continue to cope with the frustration over our COVID-19 logjam. Let me encourage you to take those strong feelings to Jesus. He knows full well what we feel and has empathy over our sense of fear and frustration.

On our video, Kim and I just talked about how to stand strong in the coming days after this election. We gave these three suggestions:

  1. Keep our eyes focused on Jesus. He is the author and perfecter of our faith.
  2. See others as God sees them. Everyone you meet is an image-bearer of God.
  3. Let hope fill our minds. Trust in the Lord with all your heart. He is sovereign.

Consider these three post-election actions with me. First, we believe that if we keep our eyes focused on Jesus and seek to be with Jesus on a regular basis that we will develop intimacy with Him which will help us expand our ability to share His love, kindness, and compassion more liberally. Second, we believe that if we can learn to see others as God sees them, as made in His image and precious in His sight, that we will grow in our empathy and acceptance of others who think and see things differently than we do. Third, we believe that if we can look forward with hope that we can be free of fear over the circumstances that seem ready to overwhelm and overload us. Here’s the hope I’m leaning hard on from Proverbs 3:5: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding.” That is where I’m getting my strength right now.

I love you and want you to know that I’m here for you and will be here for you as long as God allows. Let’s grow in hope and then look for ways to unleash it together so that everyone can know where hope is found!

I loved how much fun we had serving our community at our Drive-Thru Fall Family Festival last Saturday. It was spectacular in every way. People were served and expressed great gratitude for giving them some way to have fun after all the months of COVID isolation. Kids had a blast just being kids, and the beauty of it is that many of them were able to share it with their parents. It was so fun to see kids poking out of sunroofs, sitting in the back of pickups, driving cars, and even standing in costume on a trailer just like they were in a Halloween parade. I’m so grateful for Pastor John and Mare Dibert for the creativity and hard work to get it all together. But most of all, I’m grateful for the huge gang of volunteers who tirelessly served to make it all go so smoothly. Thank you everyone!

I’m super thrilled about the
Family Game Night on November 10. Also, the past few years we’ve used the Advent season to bring us closer to realizing the true meaning of Christmas. Pastor Bobby, Hope and Alexis have worked to offer our families an interactive kid-friendly Advent activity that you’ll put together during the Simply Christmas Craft Night that you will use during the entire Advent season. I love how parents will be engaging with their kids in this easy to access spiritual journey. Make sure to plan to gather in the lobby of the church and have a JOLLY good time. Following Advent as a family will help you and your kids engage more deeply with the true meaning of Christmas. I wish I had been more aware of the power of Advent when my kids were younger.

This Sunday we get to tackle an easier and less confrontational section of Proverbs as we look at the “Ingredients of Wisdom.” We’ll be learning from Proverbs 6:1-19 if you want to read ahead.

During this time when it’s impossible for us all to be on campus together, please make sure to stay engaged online if you can’t be here with us in person. Our services will continue to be streamed live at 9:00 and 11:00am, or you can watch them on demand any time you want right from our
website or APP. Here’s an idea: When you’re watching online, please invite your friends to join you. If you haven’t downloaded the TCC APP, just go to the APP store and search for TCC GRASS VALLEY and download it today.

We plan to add live music back in as soon as possible, but until we do, our Worship Arts Team will keep recording quality and inspiring song sets each week that will allow us to engage in worship together.

Heads up: After such a long hot and dry season, there is a chance of rain and colder temperatures on Sunday so we’re moving our outdoor venue to the Student’s Multi-Purpose Room. If you’ve enjoyed the freedom and space of the outdoor venue, I believe you’ll find the indoor option to fit you well.

Let me encourage our young families that we have space for you and to keep checking the website for new activities.  Please make sure to register your kiddos on our website before you arrive.

Our Student Ministry Team has moved to a format on Wednesdays from 6:30-7:30pm at the church that will allow our students to engage. Junior High students meet with their leaders on one end of the building and High School students and their leaders meet on the other. Students are also meeting at 10:30am on Sundays for connect time and donuts, and then they attend the 11:00am service together. Make sure to encourage your students to be here because they need community in ways they may not even be aware.

Easter is almost here — and we’ve got a full weekend planned to connect and celebrate as a church family! Here’s everything coming up: Good Friday Community Service – 12pm @ TCC Join us Friday at Noon at Twin Cities Church as we gather with churches from across Nevada County to remember the triumph of the cross. It will be a wonderful time of worship, unity, and gratitude for the grace Jesus purchased for us. Egg Hunt & Pancake Breakfast – Saturday at 9am Bring the whole family out for a fun morning filled with pancakes, eggs (the plastic kind), and connection with our local community. It’s a great way to build memories and share the joy of Easter with our neighbors. Easter Sunday – He Is Risen! Celebrate the resurrection with us on Sunday at one of our three Easter services: 8:15, 9:45, & 11:30am . This is the perfect opportunity to invite a friend, neighbor, or coworker to come experience hope and new life in Jesus. The 8:15am service is typically the lightest attended, so if you’re flexible, join us early and help make space for guests later in the morning. We can’t wait to see you this weekend! This weekend, we’ll prepare our hearts for Easter by reflecting on Palm Sunday. As Jesus entered Jerusalem, crowds lined the road shouting, “Hosanna!” — a cry of praise and hope. They had big expectations for what He had come to do. But just days later, their cries would turn to “Crucify Him!” We’ll explore how quickly expectations can turn to disappointment — and how dangerous it can be when we carry those same kinds of expectations into our relationship with God. Join us as we walk with Jesus into Holy Week and open our hearts to the kind of King He really is — not always the one we expect, but always the one we need. This weekend, we wrap up our study through Ephesians with a powerful call to stand firm in our God-given identity. Throughout this letter, Paul has reminded us that we are not meant to be shaped by the world around us. Just as the Ephesian believers faced immense pressure to conform — socially, politically, ethically, and spiritually — we, too, are constantly tempted to fit into the mold of our culture. But Paul’s message is clear: Don’t give in. Don’t be shaped by the world. Stand firm IN CHRIST. Join us this Sunday as we embrace our role in God’s quiet, subversive revolution. We’re also in a special season of investing in the future — both here at Twin Cities and in Uganda. This is a unique opportunity to strengthen our church home while helping build a new church for our partners in Uganda. Click here to learn how you can help make a lasting impact. Last weekend, it was such a joy watching Ron and Kim unpack Paul’s exhortations to husbands and wives. But marriage is only one of the relationships that Paul addresses in Ephesians. He also speaks about the dynamics between parents and children as well as the first century version of employers and employees. However, rather than just providing some tips on how to be a better parent, employer, or spouse , we are going to dig beneath the surface to the underlying power dynamics that often make relationships so contentious. And we will discover that what Paul is offering us is far more than some tips for a better marriage. He’s actually offering a radically different vision for how to approach every relationship. I can’t wait to explore this incredibly rich and relevant topic with you this Sunday. We’re also in a special season of investing in the future — both here at Twin Cities and in Uganda. This Sunday is going to be an exciting one. Our founding couple, Ron and Kim Thompson, will be unpacking Paul’s words about how to honor Christ and support one another in marriage. Whether you’re married, single, or somewhere in between, this message will be deeply relevant and will help us grapple with what it means to live as Children of God within relationship with other imperfect image bearers. You won’t want to miss it! Investing in Our Future We’re in an exciting season of growth — both here at Twin Cities and in Uganda. As I shared last weekend, our church home needs a few critical updates, and we also have the opportunity to help build a new home for a sister church in Uganda. We’d love for you to be part of this lasting impact. Click here to learn how you can invest in the future. Have you ever felt the pull of old habits, the struggle between who you were and who God is calling you to be? As we continue our study through Paul’s letter to the Ephesians, he will challenge us to leave behind our former way of life and embrace our true identity in Christ. This weekend, we will explore the destructive nature of sin – the way it deadens our sensitivity and hinders us from ever finding true satisfaction. Thankfully, there’s hope! True transformation and freedom are possible if we will allow the Holy Spirit to help us clean house. Our lives depend on it. As we step into the second half of Paul’s letter to the Ephesians, the focus shifts from who we are in Christ to how we are called to live in light of that truth. This Sunday, we’ll explore what it means to be gifted and equipped by the Holy Spirit — not just for our own benefit, but for the strengthening of the Church. Each of us has been entrusted with spiritual gifts, uniquely intended to build up the body of Christ. But if we don’t recognize or use them, we miss out on the part God has called us to play in being the body of Christ. What are spiritual gifts really for? How do we discover them? And what does it look like when we fully embrace them as a church? Join us as we dig into Ephesians 4 and uncover how we can step into the fullness of God’s calling. Also, a quick reminder — Grow University begins next week! If you're looking for a way to get more connected and discover how God has uniquely shaped you, this is your next step. As we reach the midpoint of our journey through Ephesians, we come to a pivotal transition. Paul has reminded us that we are deeply rooted in God’s love — but what does that mean for how we live ? This Sunday, we’ll explore what it truly means to embody the fullness of God — not just as individuals, but as a church. We are called to be more than attendees; we are the dwelling place of His Spirit, sent to reflect His heart in the world. This conversation will challenge the way we define success as a church. If we truly are the body of Christ, how do we measure whether we’re living out that calling? Hint: it’s not about counting attendance or the quality of our programs. Over the last couple of weekends, we have been exploring the good news that, in Christ, God has broken down every dividing wall to create one united family. Though we may come from different backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives, God weaves us together into a beautiful mosaic — His Church. Yet, many of us struggle to believe that we truly belong. We carry doubts about our worthiness, shaped by our past, our insecurities, and even our earthly relationships. This week, we’ll explore Paul’s prayer in Ephesians 3:14-21, where he prays that we might not only know, but rest in the overwhelming love of our Heavenly Father. By the way, you don’t have to go halfway around the world to make a difference. Next Thursday, a group from TCC will be heading down to Convoy of Hope’s facility in Sacramento to help pack up a shipment of supplies to help those impacted by the fires in SoCal. If you’re interested in participating, please contact Kathy Arnoldi for more details. We look forward to seeing you this Sunday!
